I was back on the SMU campus the other night night for a fireside chat with Anne Chow, former CEO of AT&T Business and author of Lead Bigger.

Anne reminded us of something simple but profound:

“Trust is the most important currency in business. Relationships matter.”

Anne framed it as Trust = Character + Competence. Character should never change, but Competence depends on the situation. Her example: When she needed shoulder surgery, she refused to see her brother who is a doctor! Why? Because he’s incompetent! Turns out he’s an OBGYN, so while competent in that field, he was incompetent for what she needed! 😂

All kidding aside, this hits home for me. Online or off, credibility comes from showing consistency and expertise. That’s how opportunities find you.

Her book, Lead Bigger dives deeper into how leaders expand their impact across work, workforce and workplace. Well worth the read! 👊

Always good to be back on campus, reconnecting and learning from leaders who push us to think in new ways and to lead bigger.
