SXSW and the Power of Unplanned Conversations

SXSW and the Power of Unplanned Conversations

For the past 12 years, I’ve made the pilgrimage to Austin every March for SXSW.  And each year, people ask me the same question: “What are the best sessions?”

My answer usually surprises them. The sessions are fine. But the real magic of SXSW happens between them.

SXSW started simple

When I was in college in the late 1980s, South by Southwest was a music festival.

Austin bars. Up-and-coming bands. Late nights.  In 1989 it was 15 venues and the cost was $10.00!

Over time it evolved into something much bigger.

Today SXSW blends technology, film, music, culture, startups, marketing, and innovation into one sprawling ecosystem of ideas.  It can be chaotic. And it can be crowded.

But it’s wonderful.

The real value isn’t the schedule

Many people approach SXSW like a traditional conference. They build detailed agendas. They map sessions. They sprint across Austin trying to catch everything.

That’s the wrong approach.

The real power of SXSW comes from finding the flow.

The hallway conversations

Over the years I’ve met founders, authors, technologists, marketers, filmmakers, … curious people from every corner of the world.

Some of the best conversations started completely by accident, Waiting in line for coffee. Sitting next to someone at a panel. Walking between venues.

Ten minutes later you’re deep into a discussion about the latest trends, a college trip to abroad, your favorite flavor ice-cream or any one of a million random topics. And all of those conversations often matter more than the keynote you originally planned to attend.

Why? Because you connected at a human level. Because you were intellectually curious and struck up a conversation by making an observation or asking a questions and that led to other bigger and better discussions.

SXSW rewards curiosity

SXSW isn’t about optimizing your calendar. It’s about staying open to discovery.

It’s about leaving space for the unexpected. For talking to strangers. For following interesting ideas. For not fully following your pre-planned agenda.

So let curiosity guide the day.

Because the most valuable thing you might find at SXSW… isn’t on the official schedule.

My personal tradition

For me, SXSW has become a yearly reset. A place to listen, observe, and explore where ideas are moving. And yes — I’ll still attend a few sessions.

But I’ve learned something over the years: If a conversation gets interesting enough… I’m happy to miss the panel.

Because the truly best ideas rarely arrive on a stage.  Instead, they show up in the surrounding conversations.

And as always —

I want you to win!
