Are You Prepared for a Layoff?

Or are you still relying on the Apply button?  Let’s start with something most professionals don’t want to admit:

The Apply button doesn’t work.

Not at scale. Not consistently. Not for meaningful roles. And definitely not in a layoff environment.

The Market Has Shifted (Whether You Have or Not)

We are now in what the Wall Street Journal calls the “era of the mega-layoff.” Companies aren’t trimming around the edges anymore. They’re making large, strategic cuts and being rewarded for it.

  • Massive layoffs are now followed by stock increases
  • Executives are openly sharing playbooks for workforce reduction
  • Some leaders believe companies could cut 30–50% of staff with little impact

This is not a downturn. This is a reset in how companies think about talent.

The Old Career Model Is Breaking

The traditional model looked like this:

  1. Do good work
  2. Stay loyal
  3. Apply when needed
  4. Get hired

That model assumed:

  • Stability
  • Linear progression
  • Performance-based retention

None of those are guaranteed anymore.

Now the model looks like this:

  1. Be discoverable
  2. Be credible
  3. Be trusted before the need exists

Because when layoffs happen, Decisions get made fast.

The Apply Button Is a Losing Strategy

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: When you click “Apply,” you are:

  • One of hundreds (sometimes thousands)
  • Evaluated in seconds
  • Competing without context

You are reduced to:

  • A resume
  • A job title
  • A keyword match

And in a crowded, uncertain market? That’s not enough.

The Real Game: Discoverability

The professionals who move fastest after layoffs don’t rely on applications. They rely on:

  • Inbound interest
  • Warm introductions
  • Pre-existing credibility

They’ve already done the work. They are:

  • Known in their space
  • Recognized for their thinking
  • Trusted beyond their current role

So, when disruption hits, opportunities find them.

This Is Where Most People Get It Wrong

They react to uncertainty by increasing activity:

  • More posting
  • More networking
  • More “visibility”

But visibility alone is shallow. And shallow signals don’t hold up under scrutiny.

Visibility vs. Credibility (The Distinction That Matters)

Visibility says: “I’m active.”

Credibility says: “I’m trusted.”

Visibility gets you seen; Credibility gets you selected.

And in a layoff environment:

👉 Seen is optional
👉 Selected is everything

A Simple Reality Most Professionals Ignore

When someone Googles  you up — and they will —  They’re not asking:

  • “Are they posting?”

Instead, they’re asking:

  • “Do I believe them?”
  • “Do they know what they’re talking about?”
  • “Would I put them in front of a client, team, or board?”

That’s not branding. That’s validation.

    or
