The Hidden Revenue Leak Nobody Is Measuring: Executive Invisibility Risk™

by | Aug 7, 2026

Most companies spend millions making their brand visible, but almost none spend a single dollar making their executives findable. That gap costs companies millions of dollars each year.  I know because I’ve watched it happen.

The executive had no digital footprint. No interviews, no articles, no evidence of expertise beyond a title on a slide. His company was in the final stretch of a significant enterprise deal when the buying committee did what buying committees always do. They Googled him. What they found wasn’t confidence. It was silence.

And that silence introduced doubt and risk. That is when the deal died.

Another executive, at a different company, took a different path. We built a credible digital presence around the expertise that he and his already had: articles, interviews, visibility at industry conferences, and real engagement with audiences. Months later, a prospect had already researched the executive team before Sales ever picked up the phone. The deal closed for more than $5 million, in about a third of the company’s normal sales cycle.

Same market. Same caliber of executive. Completely different outcome. The difference wasn’t marketing. It was proof.

I call this Executive Invisibility Risk™.

This happens when people go looking to validate your executives, whether they are customers, investors, sales leads, or future employees. They want proof of the expertise, the knowledge, the value, not a claim of it. Marketing departments are good at telling an audience your executives are credible. This audience needs to see it for themselves. Seeing the proof is what builds the credibility, and credibility is what sends the signal that earns trust. Without it, you’re stuck at the top of the sales funnel with awareness and nothing more.

You won’t see this cost on a dashboard. You will see it in a sales cycle that runs long, a deal that goes quiet, a recruiting search that stalls, a reporter who calls your competitor instead of you. And somewhere, someone is quietly wondering why, if this person is really a leader in the industry, they cannot find them.

Every major buying decision today includes digital due diligence, whether anyone admits it or not. People aren’t just evaluating your company anymore. They’re evaluating your leadership before they ever say hello.

I’ve spent years building Digital Validation® with executives who understand that. Now I’m starting research for my next book on the flip side of it: what it costs when the proof isn’t there:  The Executive Invisibility Risk™.

I’m interviewing CHROs, CROs, and sales leaders who’ve watched this play out inside their own companies, for better or worse.

Has your organization ever won, or lost, something real because of an executive’s digital presence? I’d like to hear it.

And as always —

FAQ

What is Executive Invisibility Risk™?
Executive Invisibility Risk™ is the business risk created when a company’s leaders have little or no credible digital presence. When customers, investors, or future employees search for proof of an executive’s expertise and find nothing, it introduces doubt at exactly the moment trust needs to be building.

How is this different from personal branding?
Personal branding is often about visibility for its own sake. Executive Invisibility Risk™ is about what happens when visibility is missing at a business-critical moment, like due diligence on a major deal, a media inquiry, or a candidate evaluating a company’s leadership before accepting an offer. The risk isn’t a LinkedIn problem. It’s a revenue, hiring, and reputation problem.

Which departments does this affect?
Sales, HR, and Communications all carry a piece of this risk. Sales loses deals when buying committees can’t validate the executives they’re working with. HR loses candidates and struggles to recruit senior talent when leadership is invisible online. Communications loses earned media opportunities when journalists can’t find a credible source inside the company.

What’s the connection to Digital Validation®?
Digital Validation® is the framework Knox Keith has taught for years to build credible executive presence online. Executive Invisibility Risk™ names the cost of not having it. One is the problem, the other is the solution.

What is the research Knox mentions in this post?
Knox is interviewing CHROs, CROs, and sales leaders for his next book, which examines how Executive Invisibility Risk™ shows up inside real organizations, in hiring, reputation, and revenue.
