From Tom Peters’ “The Brand Called You” to Today’s Credibility Crisis — Wake Up: Digital Validation™ Is Your Only Lifeline in 2026

Ideas. Perspective. Vision.

Let’s drop the nostalgia for a second. Tom Peters didn’t just write an article in 1997—he lit a fuse. His Fast Company piece, “The Brand Called You,” wasn’t commentary. It was a declaration.

We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc.”  That line changed everything.

Peters—already a heavyweight from In Search of Excellence—wasn’t pushing fluff. He was calling for ownership. Responsibility. Visibility tied to value. His message was simple but powerful: build a reputation rooted in passion, commitment, results—and above all—credibility.

Not attention.

Let me repeat that louder for those of you in the back of the room:  Tom Peters was not talking about attention.  Tom Peter’s focused on Credibility.

His idea sparked a movement. People like William Arruda pivoted careers. Professionals began thinking like free agents. And his timing was incredible.  Shortly after this 1997 article, the corporate ladder started to wobble with right sizing, downsizing and mass layoffs.  What Peters did connected self-marketing to something deeply American—entrepreneurship, independence, earned reputation.

The mandate was clear: Prove your value so the market seeks you out.

Substance over spectacle.

And then… we completely bastardized it.

A few short years later, social media showed up and took Peters’ call for leadership and turned it into performance art.

Vanity metrics replaced proof. “Look at me” replaced “Here’s what I’ve done.”

Now it’s viral hooks, recycled insights, and performative vulnerability. Everyone is shouting at the top of the funnel—awareness, attention, impressions—but no one is building what actually matters:

  • Consideration
  • Trust
  • Decision

The middle and bottom of the sales funnel? Completely ignored.

Welcome to the Credibility Crisis

This is what Amanda Russell and I keep calling out: we’re in a full-blown credibility crisis.

Noise is everywhere. AI is flooding the system. Deepfakes are eroding trust.

Executives post polished narratives while their companies quietly bleed credibility. (That McDonald’s CEO “tiny bite” moment? Perfect example—saying one thing, signaling another. People notice.)

And here’s the reality:

  • Buyers Google you first
  • Employers vet you before they talk to you
  • Partners assume skepticism by default

Attention is cheap. And, Trust is the scarce asset.

Amanda nails it with her equation: Influence = Attention + Trust (Credibility + Benevolence)

Yet, we’ve optimized for attention.  The result?  Trust is bleeding out.

Credibility in Leadership — Where This Gets Real

This isn’t theoretical—especially if you lead. Your team is watching. Your board is evaluating. Your customers are judging.

You can’t post inspirational quotes while your organization struggles behind the scenes and expect credibility to hold. It won’t.

But when you show:

  • How you think
  • How you solve problems
  • Real examples of impact
  • Peer validation

…everything changes.

You don’t just lead. You attract.

Deals. Talent. Loyalty.

Because credibility isn’t polish. It’s consistency.

Why This Is Important

We are entering an era of infinite content. And when AI can generate anything and anyone can say anything without proof, then everything starts to look and sound the same.

Decision-makers have become overwhelmed, guarded, and skeptical. Visibility might get you a glance. But, proof gets you chosen.

The Only Way Out: Digital Validation™

This is where Digital Validation™ comes in. When you only focus on creating more content without credibility, you’re only generating more noise in an already loud room.  Instead, focus on Proof.

Digital Validation™ is what happens when someone looks you up—and finds consistent, verifiable evidence of your expertise. Not claims, but receipts.

What That Actually Looks Like

  • A consultant sharing real breakdowns of client challenges and outcomes—with clients validating in the comments
  • An executive showcasing speaking clips, recommendations, and measurable impact
  • A sales leader aligning their team’s content to amplify credibility across the organization
  • Testimonials that are recent, specific, and real
  • Consistent insights that help others—not just promote yourself

This is not personal branding 2.0. This is value-first, externally validated credibility.

Bottom Line — No Sugarcoating

If you’re still playing the “look at me” game in 2026… You’re losing. Visibility is table stakes.

Being trusted—and chosen—is earned.

Tom Peters told us to be the head marketer of You. But he didn’t mean posture.

He meant that you had to prove it.

The Question You Can’t Avoid

If someone Googled you right now—or pulled up your LinkedIn…Would they find Digital Validation™? Or just more noise?
